Durian Fruit Export to China Faces Challenges Due to Stricter Inspections
Vietnamese durian exporters are facing significant challenges due to China's stricter import regulations. New testing requirements for Auramine O, a potential carcinogen, have resulted in numerous durian shipments being turned back at the border. Dak Lak businesses like Anh Thu Dak Lak Co., Ltd. have reported substantial financial losses, with some forced to sell their fruit at low prices to avoid spoilage after lengthy delays at customs. The increased scrutiny follows the detection of Auramine O in Thai durian shipments in late 2024. While most Vietnamese durian exports are pre-cleared for expedited processing, Chinese customs are now conducting more thorough inspections, significantly slowing down clearance. The slowdown at border crossings like Huu Nghi has caused a sharp decrease in the number of durian trucks processed daily. Experts urge Vietnamese exporters to adapt quickly to the new regulations to minimize losses and maintain market access. The Plant Protection Department is working to enforce stricter quality controls and traceability within Vietnam's durian industry.
